SPL Elite Coaching Forum

The second SPL Elite Coaching Forum was hosted by SPL executive chairman Lex Gold at Hampden Park and Gleneagles over the weekend - and Gretna Head Coach Davie Irons attended the event for the first time.

The event was designed to provide an opportunity for Scotland’s top managers and coaches to exchange and offer their views and to explore some of the recent tactical and coaching trends.

UEFA Technical Director Andy Roxburgh led the formal session on Sunday with Sir Alex Ferguson and Gérard Houllier providing key insights and presentations from their wealth of experiences.

The coaches discussed a range of subjects including An analysis of the UEFA Champions League 06/07; Lessons from the Frontline (Managerial Issues); Top Level Training Methods and the Development of Home-Grown Talent.

Alongside the Clydesdale Bank Premier League managers, David Moyes, George Burley, Peter Grant and Tommy McIntyre all attended.

Alex McLeish also joined the group for dinner on Saturday evening following the superb result against the Ukraine. He received a rousing welcome from his peers on arrival.

“Scottish football is riding the crest of a wave at the moment but we cannot stand still,” said Lex Gold.

“We must constantly strive to do better. This event is part of that process to help develop our managers, coaches and the overall game in Scotland. The quality of the sessions was first class. Thanks to Sir Alex, Gérard and Andy.”
