Irons hails battling Gretna
Sunday, December 23rd, 2007Head Coach Davie Irons praised the character of his side after their battling performance helped secure the first away win of the season.
The visitors survived a second-half onslaught from Dundee United to pick-up a much needed three points and Irons was understandably delighted with the outcome.
“We didn’t out-play Dundee United but we out-fought them,” he said.
“We defended well in the second-half and our resilience was superb. We knew they were going to bombard us and they did to an extent, but to be fair they haven’t created that many clear chances.”
“Credit to the boys though, they all put a hard shift in and showed a real desire to get a victory.”
“If you look at our record from earlier in the season, after we have conceded one we have collapsed. But last week, and again today, we have remained positive and restored our lead.”
“It’s the first-time this season we have got back-to-back results and we need to keep it going.”
“It has obviously given everyone a massive lift. The players are working their socks off on a daily basis to help turn things around, so it’s well deserved.”
“Seven points is still a big gap but we have games coming thick and fast over the Christmas and New Year period, including one against St Mirren, so it could make a big difference to the league table.”
“We have only lost one in our last four games, hopefully it’s turning gradually in our favour and we just have to hang in there and stay in touch with the teams above us.”
