Irons blasts penalty decision
Sunday, February 17th, 2008Davie Irons has called for more consistency from referees after condemning Alan Freeland’s performance in the 3-1 defeat to Motherwell on Saturday.
Freeland was at the centre of more controversy, days after St Mirren objected to his officiating at their Scottish Cup replay against Dundee United.
He ignored strong claims for a spot-kick when Stephen Craigan pushed Kenny Deuchar in the back as he rose to meet Skelton’s cross.
It proved to be a key decision as just two minutes later, Ross McCormack netted to put the game beyond Gretna.
“Coaches and managers don’t have any right to influence who referees games and I don’t agree with what has gone on this week, but he is dealing with people whose livelihoods are at stake,” he said.
“We’re fighting for our lives and if people want to referee at this level they’ve got to take the flak that goes with it.”
“In my eyes it was as blatant a push in the back as we’ve seen this season, but the referee doesn’t give it - then 30 seconds later he gives one for less of a push outside the box.”
“It’s supposed to make you feel better but it doesn’t change things.”
“Call me biased or say I’m watching the game through black and white glasses, but as far as I’m concerned, when it came to the big decisions that influence the game he didn’t get it right.”
Deuchar echoed the sentiments of his manager and said: “I went up to head the ball and the boy blatantly pushed me in the box but apparently it’s not a penalty.”
“They were trying to get my shirt before the end of the game. I don’t understand why I get so many fouls given against me when I’m going for the ball. I’m not interested in touching the defender.”
“They’re always trying to bump me and stop me getting the ball yet I seem to get penalised all the time.”
