Fab farewell

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Injured star Fabian Yantorno has been released from his contract at Gretna to enable him to continue his rehabilitation with another club.

The popular Uruguayan suffered knee ligament damage against Falkirk two months ago and has asked to leave the Black and Whites as he begins his recovery.

Fabian Yantorno

Yantorno had been one of the few success stories this season following his summer arrival from Miramar Misiones.

He endeared himself to the fans with a sting of flamboyant displays, which won him numerous man-of-the-match awards and attracted interest from a whole host of clubs.

Unfortunately however, his season was cut short after a horrific collision with Bairns goalkeeper Tim Krul at Fir Park on the 19th January.

“Fabian needs specialist rehabilitation which we can’t provide,” explained Caretaker Manager Mick Wadsworth.

“It was his and his agent’s wish that he could be released so he could go elsewhere for treatment. We don’t have the finance or the facilities to offer the care he needs.”

“He was only on a one year contract and was available in the summer. The chances of him signing for us next year with what has happened at the club are next to zero.”

“His welfare is more important than anything else and I don’t think anyone can deny him that. I honestly think he would have gone anyway. A bigger club would have come in for him as he was fantastic in the first half of the season.”

Fab scored 4 goals in 24 appearances for Gretna and we wish him every success in his future career.

He looks set to be followed out the door by French duo Aurélien Collin and Mickael Buscher, who have also asked to leave.

“They have exercised the right to try and find other clubs, whether FIFA allow them to do so I don’t know – that’s the chance their prepared to take,” added Wadsworth.

“I’m very disappointed to a degree because Gretna gave them a great chance for nothing but their contracts will probably be cancelled on Tuesday.”
