No excuses

Gavin Skelton offered no excuses for Gretna’s lacklustre performance in the record defeat to Inverness Caley Thistle on Saturday.

The midfielder gave an honest assesment of the 6-1 reverse at the Caledonian Stadium where the Black and Whites suffered their heaviest defeat of the season.

They had to contend with an early start, a long bus journey and a cold pre-match meal but Skelton refused to blame their preparation.

“After doing reasonably well in the few weeks prior to this game we just let ourselves down badly,” he said.

“I’m not going to use the lack of preparation as an excuse. We weren’t at the races - simple as that. It’s not the first time this season that our preparation hasn’t been great.”

“We’ve had a game one day after being told the club’s going out of business and we’ve still managed to do ourselves justice.”

“This was nothing, coming up here and having our lunch on the bus, compared to what we’ve been through.”

“Even though we’re relegated it still hurts to lose in this kind of manner. That’s even more disappointing when you think we’re all going to be looking for clubs over the next few weeks.”

“Most of us are going to be out of contract soon and you don’t want to be putting in performances like that. Individually and collectively we weren’t good enough. We started badly and never got out of first gear.”

“All season we’ve fought for everything even if we haven’t been good enough whereas today we didn’t do that.”
